FAVORITES: KENYON-WANAMINGO KNIGHTS and the ZUMBROTA-MAZZEPA COUGARS
The Knights should be a favorite in Section 1A with the experience back from their 19-8 campaign and runner up finish in section 1A behind Zumbrota-Mazzepa. They have two state champions returning, back are Mitchell Lexvold and Oakley McLain. They have ten wrestlers returning with 10 or more wins. Look for Wayne Henslin and Alex Jackson along with their returning state champions to lead the way for the Knights to make a strong challenge for section and conference honors. Despite the graduation of four seniors, three of which were state qualifiers.
Look for the Cougars of Zumbrota-Mazzepa to make a strong challenge for both section and conference honors. They have back from their 25-7 and 6th place state tourney honors one state qualifier, four section place winners and five others with a great deal of experience. So despite the fact they did graduate seven seniors including four state qualifiers of which three were state place winners. Look for Joey Majerus, Mitchell Watkins and Cody Heitman to be their key leaders.
DARKHORES: CHATFIELD GOPHERS and the GOODHUE WILDCATS
The Gophers of Chatfield could make a challenge as they have back a good bunch from their 16-8 campaign. They have four section place winners and six others returning with a great deal of experience. They did graduate four seniors including three section place winners one of which was a state qualifier. But look for them to make a challenge for section and conference honors. Cody Wrubel, Alex Haffner and Harvey Friederichs will be their key leaders.
The Wildcats of Goodhue should challenge for honors as they have back from their 20-9 campaign six section place winners and seven others with a great deal of experience. This does include nine wrestlers with 12 or more wins. So despite the graduation of five seniors including four section place winners they should be looking to challenge for a top four spot in the section 1A dual meet campaign. Their key leaders should be Kyle Drehmel, Matt Lexvold and Mitchell Breuer.
Look for the Fighting Saints of St. Charles and the Lake City Tigers to push for a top four spot in the section. There are three medal winners back from last season including two state champions: Mitchel Lexvold and Oakley McLain are both returning state champions and Joe Majerus earned third place. There are a total six state qualifiers returning from last year's state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are Wayne Henslin of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Andrew Dayland of St. Charles, Rusty Grisim and Will Balow of Lake City, Nick Roemer of Wabasha-Kellogg and Mason Moreno of Hayfield.
Look for the following wrestlers: Jace Clawiter of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Hunter Prodzinski of Zumborta-Mazeppa, A. J. Riley, Hank Friedericks and Cody Bly of Chatfield, Weston Sadient, Justin Simmons, Ryan Tiphe and Jeremy Schrimpt of Goodhue, Andrew Schmidt, Shane Siewert and Carston Dammann of Lake City, Cody Ball, Matt Wilson and Daniel Chaves of St. Charles, Lucas Ethcason and Levi Hichy of Triton, Paul Krueger and Matt Verdich of Wabasha-Kellogg, Sonny Komenieski and Dakota Welsh of Dover-Eyota, Brad Haze and Sam McPhail of Pine Island and Isaac Wangen and Joe Volvarino of Hayfield to challenge for medals at the end of the season.
