FAVORITES: PIERZ PIONEERS and the AITKIN GOBBLERS
The Pioneers of Pierz had an outstanding season last year, as they posted a 22-7 dual meet mark and a section championship. They return three state qualifiers, five section place winners and seven others with a great deal of experience. The Pioneers did graduate five seniors including state tourney wrestlers, one which was a state champion. But if this group stays healthy thru out the season look for this team to be better than last years. They should improve on those dual meet marks and challenge for section and conference honors. It is possibly for the Pioneers to earn some state honors with this team. Nathan Tomala, Brandon Sullivan, Brad Meyer, Chris Ortmann and Kolton Eischen to be their key leaders thru out the season for them.
The Gobblers of Aitkin had a good season last year as they had 12-5 dual meet marks and they had fourteen section place winners. Back from that team are three state qualifiers, including one state place winner. They also bring back six section place winners and three others with a great deal of experience. Despite the fact that the Gobblers graduated seven including five section place winners, they should again make a strong challenge for both section and conference honors. Jordan Chouanard, Jerod Novak, Brian Wold and Cooper Blau should be their key leaders thru out the season.
DARKHORSES: HOLDINGFORD HUSKERS and the MILLE LACS RAIDERS
The Huskers of Holdingford had a very good season as they posted 19-8 dual meet marks and were a final four team in a very tough section 5A. Back from that team is one state qualifier, five section place winners and eight others with a great deal of experience. The Huskers graduated two seniors including two section place winners, so look for them to make a very strong challenge for section honors. Mike Jarnot, Trevor Scott and Zach Scott should be their key leaders thru out the season.
The Raiders of Mille Lacs had a very good season as they posted 16-5 dual meet marks and were section runner ups. Back from that team are three state qualifiers, five section place winners and three others with experience. The Raiders did graduate seven very good seniors, including four section place winners of which two were state qualifiers. Thus will be hard pressed to improve on those dual meet marks. But look for them to challenge for a top four spot in what should be a very balanced section. They will make a strong challenge once again for conference honors. Cody Whitney, Nik Borchert, Luke Thompson and Gabe Tramm should be their key leaders thru out the season.
Look for Royalton and Ogilvie to also make a strong challenge for one of those top four spots in their section dual meet campaign. There are two state medal winners back from last season that includes: Mike Jarnot of Holdingford, Jordan Chouanard of Aitkin. There are a total of thirteen returning state qualifiers from last year's state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are: Nick Lochner of Pierz, Andy Poster, Mitch Lange, Cory Wensmann and Brady Moulzolf of Royalton, Collin Mitchell of Ogilvie and Caleb Voss of Crosby-Ironton.
Look for the following wrestlers; Cody VanZee, Ryley Smude, Dustin Waytashek, and Josh Lanners of Pierz, Colton LaPlante, Adam Jackson and Shaun Philipp of Aitkin, Tyler Schwartz, Kyle Gerads, Luke Doll and Jordan Gombos of Holdingford, Andy Summis, Matthew Petty and Tyler Knudson of Mille Lacs, Tony Gadzcy and Tyler Hegna of Royalton, Jake Hickerson, Kyle Carda and Brian Hoff of Ogilvie, Kelsey Bocek, Phong Nguyen, NaXiong and Chau Shee of Minneapolis Patrick Henry, Joe Gura of Crosby-Ironton, Jesse Williams of Minneoplis North and Deshon Leaner of Columbia Heights to challenge for medals at the end of the season.
