MAT RATS A SECTION 5 2010-2011
Favorites: ATWATER-COSMOS-GROVE CITY FALCONS and KIMBALL CUBS
The Falcons had a very successful campaign in 2010-2011 with their 22-4 and a West Central South conference Dual championship. They will return twenty wrestlers with a great deal of varsity experience, which includes eleven section place winners. Of those they have six state qualifiers that are returning. The Falcons are no longer a young team and bring back a ton of experience. They graduated one senior who was a section place winner, so look for the Falcons to be hungry this season. They should make a strong challenge for section dual meet honors as well as state tourney honors. Look for Ryan Larson, Hayden Rouser, Larry Bomsted, Matt Lee, Dylan Nelson, Logan Peterson, Mike Kramer and Matt Meyer to be their key leaders.
The Cubs of Kimball have back from 22-6 and their most successful season in years, seventeen wrestlers with a great deal of experience. They will have nine section place winners of which five were state qualifiers and one state place winner. With the graduation of just one senior they have some huge goals this season including section dual meet honors as well Central Minnesota Conference honors and possible some more state tourney medals. Marcus Hamer, Tanner Mills, Caramon Hanson, Jordan Joseph, Travis Schiefelbeing, Tyler Kuechle and Alex Thurber will be their key leaders for this season.
Dark Horses: EDEN VALLEY-WATKINS EAGLES and the PAYNESVILLE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs have back from their great 21-10 campaign and a Section Champion twelve wrestlers with a great deal of experience. They have seven section place winners including one state qualifier from that group along with five others. So despite the graduation of six very good seniors that include two state qualifiers and three section place winners, look for the Bulldogs to be a force in the section dual meet campaign. Matt Doom, Dominick Platou, Devin Meagher, Cole Woehler and Tyler Hemmesch should give the Bulldogs some very good leadership this season.
The Eagles of Eden Valley-Watkins will have back fourteen wrestlers from their excellent season that included a Central Minnesota Conference Championship and a final four spot in the section duals. The Eagles have back seven section place winners including one state qualifier and seven others with several varsity matches under their belt. So despite the graduation of three very good seniors including one state place winner and two section place winners, look for the Eagles to make a strong challenge to defend the Conference title and to be in the hunt for section dual meet honors. Jacob Forcier, Mike Downham, Blaine Meierhofer, Jaron Faber and Shawn Mattson will give the Eagles great leadership this upcoming season.
Look for the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers and the Osakis Silver Streaks to challenge for a top four spot in this tough section. There are three state medal winners back from last season that includes: Larry Bomstad (5th State), Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Marcus Hamer (4th State) of Kimball and Cody Torkelson (5th State) of Osakis. There are a total of eighteen returning state qualifiers from last year's state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are: Mike Jarnot and Victor Lumley of Holdingford.
Look for the following wrestlers: James Nelson, Lucas Damm, Robert Rassmussen and Tyler Berghuis of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, David Joseph, Mitch Pramann, Quintin Bryce, Austin Schiefelbein and Quinten Berres of Kimball, Brandon Walz, Tyler Magedanz and Kevin Kramer of Eden Valley-Watkins, Trevor Spanier and Clay Spanier of Paynesville, Austin Collins, Nikoloj Hagan and Nick Woolerstaff of Osakis, Jacob Braaten, Micah Klemmer and Tyrel Swensrud of Minnewaska, Bryce Feia and Galen Puiowar of Holdingford, Ross Rath, Ben Borgerdin, Dilon Knutson and Patrick Rooney of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Matt Marketon, Tony Hausladen, Joel Koch, William Schanus, Carl Heuer and Dylan Youngren of Howard-Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Preston Irsfeld, Brad Schattler and Adam Sutlief of Browerville-Eagle Valley to challenge for medals at the end of the season.
