MAT RATS A SECTION 8 2010-2011

FAVORITES: FRAZEE HORNETS and CROOKSTON |PIRATES

The Hornets have nineteen wrestlers back from their 20-1 dual meet campaign the includes a state runner up finish. They will have twelve section place winners returning, including eight state qualifiers and many with a great deal of experience. With just one very good senior graduating, which he was fourth in the state, look for the Hornets to make a strong challenge for more state honors this season. This young team has grown up a great deal the past two seasons and they have developed a pretty good balance thru out the lineup. Kody Lafraniere/Sorenson, Tanner Ellenberg, Rick Brandt, Rij Koehnen, Casey Nunn, Myrel Schermerhorn, Trevor Stilke and Bruce Lemon to be their key leaders thru out the season.

The Pirates of Crookston have back thirteen wrestlers from the 16-3 campaign, a section runner up and several regular season championships. They will have eight section place winners including three state qualifiers returning along with five others with a great deal of experience. Despite the graduation of five seniors, including four section place winners of which two were state qualifiers, look for this team to continue to improve over the season and to make a strong challenge for section dual meet honors. Anthony Caputo, Brody Davidson, Nate Merten, Wyatt Hanson and Josh Edlund will be their key leaders thru out the season.


DARK HORSES: GREENBUSH-MIDDLE RIVER/BADGER GATORS and DILWORTH-GLYNDON-FELTON REBELS

The Gators of Greenbush-Middle River/Badger have back twelve wrestlers from last year's 16-2 dual meet campaign. They will have nine section place winners returning, of which two were in the state finals last season. Along with those individuals they have three others with a lot of experience coming back. Despite the graduation of five seniors including four section place winners including two state tourney wrestlers, they should surely make a strong challenge for section dual meet honors. Look for the Gators to defend most of their championships of last season. Isaac Novacek, Alex Yeager, Ben Evans, Thomas Gullickson and Tom Ingle should be the Gators key leaders this season.

The Rebels of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton will have twenty wrestlers with varsity experience from their 7-10 dual meet campaign. They will have nine section place winners including two state qualifiers along with nine others with experience. They graduated two seniors last season including on section champion, so look for the Rebels to make huge strides this season. They should be the end of the season make a strong challenge for section honors. Shawn Johnson and Hunter Rosenfeldt should be their key leaders this season.

Look for the Cougars of Mahnomen-Waubun and the Panthers of Park Rapids to challenge for a top four spot in this tough section. There are five state medal winners back from last season that includes: Isaac Novacek (State Champion), Alex Yeager (2nd State) of Greenbush-Middle River/Badger, Kody Lafraniere/Sorenson (4th State), Tanner Ellenberg (5th State) of Frazee and Anthony Caputo (4th State). There are a total of seventeen returning state qualifiers from last year's state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are: Garret Hoffner of Mahnomen-Waubun, Jordan Ketter of Frazee and Danny Pike of Park Rapids.

Look for the following wrestlers: Brandon Van Watermulen, Nate Sandberg, Mike Moltzan and Wade Hukriede of Frazee, Cody Osland, Cody Weiland, Blake Bergeron, Nick Merten of Crookston, Teja Wojchowski, timm Ingle and Ryan Bergeron of Greenbush-Middle River/Badger, Chad Johnson and Bennett Mercil of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Jordan McArthur, Preston Zornes and Jonathon Hoffner of Mahnomen-Waubun, Ben Baumgartner of Park Rapids, Jake Malone and Sam Tellers of United North Central, Keaton Laymon of West Marshal to challenge for medals at the end of the season.
